Mini’s quirky Coupe has proven to be a rather interesting experiment in brand diversification, but it’s time for this experiment to end. 2015 will be the final model year for the Coupe; the standard Hardtop version has already switched over to an all-new platform, with a new Clubman arriving next year. So far as we can tell, the small production volume Coupe and its drop-top Roadster sibling will not be replaced.
As a part of the winding down, the Coupe range has been whittled back to just the turbocharged Cooper S and the John Cooper Works variants. These peppy models both pack a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder in different states of tune. The Cooper S makes 181 hp, while the JCW makes 208 hp. Both get a six-speed manual as standard, though a six-speed automatic is available as an option.
Putting style ahead of practicality, the Coupe trades its back seat and cargo space for a nifty roofline and a lower seating position. Although performance is no better than the conventional Hardtop, the Coupe somehow manages to feel more fun to drive from behind the wheel.
Features on the Cooper include 16-inch wheels, hood scoop, chrome exterior trim, body-colour tailgate handle, black honeycomb grille, rear roof spoiler, active rear trunk spoiler, twin central mounted exhaust tips, sport button, leatherette upholstered gearshift and handbrake gate, chrome interior door handles, leatherette upholstery, chrome exhaust, ambient interior lighting, bi-xenon headlamps, six-way manually adjustable front sport seats, automatic climate control, leather-wrapped sports steering wheel with multi-function controls, cruise control, tilt and telescoping steering column, heated exterior mirrors, heated wiper nozzles, auto up/down power windows, stainless steel footrest, keyless entry with start/stop button, third sunvisor (driver’s side), trip computer, and AM/FM/CD stereo with aux-in and USB ports.
The John Cooper Works adds 17-inch alloy wheels, dynamic traction control, aerodynamic kit, anthracite headliner, and piano black interior accents.
